Witnesses say a transformer blew up at about 4.30 am setting off terrified screams from the women's wing of a dormitory at a university in Nairobi. The panic spread to the men's wing, where students woke
up and scrambled to get out. A male student was said to have jumped through a window from a resident hall as high as five floors during the stampede and died as a result of the fall. Students said the incident evoked memories of the Garissa, which also came before dawn. "We thought it was another al Shabaab attack," said Eddy Capella, a first-year student.
